CHIREDZI, (Lowveld Post) – ROBBERS pounced on a Chiredzi woman as she opened her gate in Westhood suburb and stole cash and property amounting to over US$6000.
The group travelling in Honda Fit attacked Mercy Matambanadzo with a piece of wood before grabbing US$600, R6 000 and 20 British pounds.
They also took away a 6.5mm Barreta pistol serial number 49279, HP laptop, Telefunken plasma television, ACER and Nokia C3 cellphones, generator battery, RYOBI grinding machine, plates and blankets.
Details of the robbery emerged in the Chiredzi magistrates court on Thursday as Passmore Madzura was jailed for the offence.
His accomplices remain large.
The State submitted that the robbers followed their victim from the Chiredzi Light Industrial area while travelling in a red Honda Fit without number plates.
When Matambanadzo stopped to open the gate at her home, Madzura approached her and struck her once on the face with a piece of wood before demanding cash from the complainant.
Madzura managed to grab money and valuables from her, before fleeing from the scene with his accomplices.
The total value of the stolen property is worth US$6 125 and only US$715 was recovered.
However Madzura’s luck ran out when he was found in possession of the 6.5mm Berreta pistol at a road block in Chivhu.
Upon being quizzed, led police to the recovery of the RYOBI grinder.
Madzura (43) appeared before Chiredzi district magistrate Geraldine Mutsoto facing robbery allegations.
He was found guilty of robbery as defined in Section 126 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act.
The robber was sentenced to three years in prison without the option of a fine.
He was also ordered to pay a sum of US$3 410, R2 000 and 20 pounds by 31 December 2019 as restitution. Failure to do so will earn him another year in prison with hard labour.
His accomplices are still at large.
